Day 41 April 10, 2011 Sunday Total Mileage: 1726 Today: 60 miles

Sunrise 4/10/11 Seminole Canyon
Got up early again and started cycling before dawn.  It was warm, 77oF, when I started from Seminole Canyon State Historical Site.  It was light enough for me to see the impressive Pecos River gorge as I crossed the Route 90 Bridge, but to dark for pictures.  But Eagle Nest Creek, just before Langtry, Tx was beautiful too.

Eagles Nest
Took a short break in Langtry, elevation: 997 feet; were the Judge Roy Bean’s Museum and Visitor Center is located.  Judge Roy Bean was the “law west of the Pecos.”  He was the most “colorful” justice of the peace in “The West.”  Langtry, Tx can also claim fame for being the nearest town to Dead Man’s Gulch, the location where a silver spike joined the transcontinental tracks of Southern Pacific’s Sunset Route on Jan. 12, 1883.  The tracks stretched from New Orleans to San Francisco

At our last rest stop we met Eric from Montana, who is cycling from El Paso to Del Rio, and Linda from New Hampshire, she is cycling the Southern Tier route headed East.  They met up on the road and are traveling together to Del Rio.  It was a pleasure to talk to them about their adventures and share some of our Cliff Bars and water with them.  This area is sparsely populated and very few store or other services are available.

As we were packing up for the day, in Dryden, Tx (population: less than 50, elevation: 2110 feet) we met Allie and Roxy.  Allie has a dream too… he is walking from Oceanside, California to Miami, Florida.  Now he’s not only walking with Roxy, his dog but he is pulling a Rickshaw.  He already holds one Guinness World Record (Claim ID 278014) and the cross-country trip will set another record.  He is supporting himself on the trip by donations; David and I contributed a couple of canned goods and water. You can follow him at rickshawroadtrip.com

Tonight we are staying in Sanderson, Tx (population 861, and elevation 2903 feet) at the Canyon RV Park; we are surrounded by rugged hills, the area is called Sanderson Canyon.  The campground has one of the only laundry mats, so we’ve met a few of the locals, Faye told us all about how she came to Sanderson and how she manages to stay.
Closest to the bathroom yet!!!
