Day 42 April 11, 2011 Monday Total Mileage: 1780 Today 54 miles

Wow, it was windy last night!  The car was a rocking (and we were trying to sleep).  It calmed down some and switched directions, not in my favor…  We slept in, or to 7:30 am, hoping the wind would die down.  The temperature today was in the 70’s and the sunshine was beautiful.

Starting from Dryden, I cycled halfway to Marathon, Tx (20 miles outside); considered staying at the picnic area where I stopped, but drove into Marathon.

We are staying at the Marathon RV Park.  It is very nice, but the electricity went out in the whole town about 7:00 pm; so we are working from batteries and no posting tonight, since the Wi-Fi is down also.  No one is sure if the power outage is related to the big wildfire that apparently started yesterday, taking out 61,000 acres, leaving couple of hundred people without access to their homes.  It’s a Level 2 disaster and the local Red Cross has opened shelters in Alpine, Ft Davis and Midland.  I am scheduled to ride into Alpine tomorrow.

Jess on South Tier Tour

We met another woman cyclist here at the camp; Jess who is self-supported and has traveled by herself from Jackson, Florida and is headed to San Diego.  Hey, Mom, she is from Berea, Kentucky!
