Crossed Mobile Bay by ferry today, between Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores, AL and Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island, AL. During the Civil War, these two forts kept Mobile Bay’s ports open for ships exporting cotton, which helped finance the Confederacy. During one of the last battles of the War it is said that the saying “Damn the Torpedoes. Full Steam Ahead!” was uttered by Admiral David Glasgow Farragut. When the lead ship was demolished by a mine, in the following confusion, Farragut gave the orders embodied by these famous words. He swung his own ship clear and headed across the mines, which failed to explode. The fleet took control of the bay, which expedited the end of the War. The torpedoes to which Farragut and his contemporaries referred would today be described as tethered mines. The 45-minute ferry crossing did not count in today’s 45 miles.

Leaving Dauphin Island I crossed a three-mile long high rise bridge which was opened in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. My top speed coming down the bridge was 35 MPH according to the GPS static; I stopped looking at the speedometer at 32 MPH
